A buzzing started in my ears, louder than the rain slinging against the windows. The words echoed, until they were all I could hear.

Amaya’s voice, whispering close, from across the room.

She had no way to reach me—she didn’t have my new number—so she must’ve left this note instead—in the room that we always shared, meant just for me.

What was it, here, that she had become afraid of? So afraid that she wouldn’t tell the others?

A creak sounded from out in the hall—I didn’t know who it was. And I didn’t know whom I could trust anymore. I didn’t know, truly, what any of them were capable of.

I made my way slowly, carefully, toward the bedroom door. I placed my ear to the wood, listening hard as I held my breath.

And then, as quietly as I could, I turned the lock.
